A Texas appeals court has ruled that freight brokerage company Landstar System is responsible for paying the full $23 million jury verdict stemming from a fatal truck accident, rejecting Landstar’s argument that its liability should be limited.
The case arose from a 2017 crash in Texas involving a tractor-trailer hauling a Landstar load. A jury previously found that negligence connected to the shipment played a role in the collision and awarded $23 million in damages to the plaintiffs. While multiple parties were involved, the court ultimately determined that Landstar must cover 100% of the judgment.
Landstar had argued that it acted solely as a freight broker and should not be held fully responsible for the actions of the motor carrier. However, the court disagreed, concluding that Landstar’s contractual obligations and level of control over the shipment supported full liability under Texas law.
As a result of the ruling, Landstar announced it will record the entire judgment as an expense in its financial statements. The company stated that the charge will negatively impact earnings for the applicable reporting period.
In public disclosures, Landstar noted that it continues to evaluate its legal options, including the possibility of further appeals. However, the court’s decision significantly narrows the company’s ability to shift financial responsibility to other parties involved in the crash.
The ruling is being closely watched across the transportation and logistics industry, as it highlights the growing legal exposure freight brokers may face in catastrophic accident cases. Legal analysts say the decision could influence how brokers structure contracts, vet carriers, and manage risk moving forward.
Landstar has not indicated whether it plans to change its business practices as a result of the decision, but the case underscores the increasing scrutiny courts are placing on broker responsibility in serious trucking accidents.
